Research Ethics Regulations of Korean Journal of Sociology

Article 1 (Purpose)

The purpose of these Regulations is to specify the research-related ethical requirements that contributors, members of the Editing Committee, and examiners should meet concerning treatises published in Korean Journal of Sociology.

 

Article 2 (Researchers’ Integrity)

① Researchers shall be honest in the research they carried out concerning the research plan, design, collection of materials, allocation of research funds, compensation for participants in research, publication of research results and the like.

② Researchers shall observe generally accepted rules regarding the citation of others’ creative works.

③ Researchers shall not plagiarize the creative content of others’ works.

④ Researchers shall not submit the same treatise simultaneously to more than one journal.

 

Article 3 (Editing Committee Members’ Integrity)

① The Editing Committee members shall take full responsibility for the publication of contributed treatises with their approval and respect the personality and independence of authors as scholars.

② The Editing Committee members shall fairly deal with contributed treatises purely based on their quality and contribution-related regulations, regardless of the authors themselves.

③ The Editing Committee members shall entrust the evaluation of contributed treatises to examiners with professional knowledge and fair judgment capability. Where examiners are divided noticeably in their evaluation of a treatise, the Editing Committee members may ask for the opinion of third party experts.

④ The Editing Committee members shall keep any information on the content of a contributed treatise or the author confidential until the decision is made on the inclusion of the treatise in the journal.

 

Article 4 (Examiners’ Fairness)

① Examiners entrusted with the evaluation of a treatise shall do the job faithfully within the designated period and inform the Editing Committee of the result. Where an examiner judges that he/she is not suitable for the job, he/she shall inform the Editing Committee.

② Examiners shall evaluate treatises fairly without their academic position or acquaintance with the authors taken into account.

③ Examiners shall respect the personality and independence of the author. In the evaluation statement, they shall also state their opinions concerning the need for correction or improvement if deemed necessary.

④ Examiners shall keep any information on the content of a contributed treatise confidential unless it is necessary for the evaluation of the treatise.

 

Article 5 (Plagiarism)

① (Definition of plagiarism) Where a contributed treatise falls under any one of the following, it shall be deemed to be plagiarism.

  1. Partly or wholly copying research work done by oneself or someone else and published through academic media such as an academic journal, book, collection of presented treaties or electronic journal.
  2. Using research design or primary material related to one’s own or others’ published research work or intellectual property without disclosing the source adequately.
  3. Citing part of one’s own or others’ research work published without disclosing the source adequately with the use of quotation marks, footnotes or other proper methods.

② (Judgment on plagiarism) Judgment on plagiarism shall be made in accordance with the following procedure:

  1. The Editing Committee shall make a judgment on plagiarism based on examiners’ review, reader’s opinions or its own conclusion.
  2. Primary review of plagiarism shall be entrusted to the three initial examiners.
  3. The Editing Committee shall make a judgment on plagiarism based on what is stated in the foregoing 2 and have the author make a statement.
  4. Where the author fails to provide a proper explanation, the Editing Committee shall deem it as a case of plagiarism.
  5. Where the author has an objection to the primary judgment on plagiarism, the Editing Committee may override the objection with affirmative votes of not less than two-thirds of the participants in a session in which a majority of the members is present.

③ (Sanctions on plagiarism) Sanctions shall be placed as follows on a confirmed case of plagiarism.

  1. The author of the treatise shall not ask Korean Journal of Sociology alone or with others to carry his/her treatise for at least four years from the relevant judgment. In this case, the Editing Committee shall inform the author of the facts and the exact period.
  2. The treatise in question shall be officially removed from Korean Journal of Sociology list of treatises.
  3. The Editing Committee shall put the facts stated in the foregoing 1 and 3 on the KSA homepage and on the KSA newsletter.
  4. The Editing Committee shall inform the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRFK) of its judgment on plagiarism and sanctions taken within 30 days of the relevant judgment.

 

Article 6 (Overlapping Publications of Treatise)

① (Definition of Overlapping Publications) Where one of the following is applicable, the request for publication of a treatise shall be regarded as a case of overlapping publications.

  1. A treatise for which evaluation is underway after the author’s request for publication in another academic journal.
  2. A research work already published or a treatise which is to be published in due course.

② (Judgment on overlapping publications and sanctions) Judgment on overlapping publications shall be made in accordance with the following procedure. Sanctions shall be placed as follows on a confirmed case of overlapping publications.

  1. The Editing Committee shall make a judgment on overlapping publications based on people’s report or its own conclusion.
  2. The treatise in question stated in the foregoing 1 shall not be included in the list of treatises submitted to be published in Korean Journal of Sociology.
  3. A treatise judged to be a case of overlapping publications shall be immediately excluded from evaluation. The author of the treatise shall not ask the Korean Journal of Sociology alone or with others to carry his/her treatise for at least three years from the relevant judgment.
  4. The Editing Committee shall officially inform the relevant author of the facts and the exact period about what is stated in the foregoing 3.

③ (Re-publication of Treatises) In the event of re-publication of treatises published in the Korean Journal of Sociology in another journal, the source shall be disclosed.

 

Article 7 (Others)

Matters not covered by these Regulations shall follow the generally accepted practices of the KSA.
