General Information

The Korean Sociological Association (KSA) is a non-profit professional organization that has promoted sociological research, teaching, and publication in South Korea since 1956. The KSA has also served as an academic venue to discuss timely topics about Korean society. The Korean Journal of Sociology (KJS), as a top-rated journal in the field of Korean sociology, drives scholarly debate among sociologists and scholars in related fields on many thematic issues of sociology

The missions of the KSA are specified as:
To enhance sociological research and education.
To seek and maintain the links with sociologists within South Korea and around the world.
To advance the discipline of sociology in relation with other social science disciplines.
To cultivate the contribution of sociology to the general public.

Founded by 14 sociologists on October 24, 1956, the KSA has grown by leaps and bounds. As of June 1, 2023, it has 1,634 individual members, 91 collective members (including 37 sociology departments at universities in Korea), and 7 institutional members (including Statistics Korea, the Constitutional Research Institute, and the Korea Institute of Criminology and Justice).

The KSA has 26 Research Sections, i.e. Sociological Theory (RS #A-1), Medicine/Science and Health (RS #B-1), International Migration and Race/Ethnicity (RS #C-1), Rural Sociology (RS #D-1), Sociology of Work (RS #E-1), and Family Research (RS #E-7). And, the KSA has not only 42 relevant associations in Korea, but also networks with major foreign and international associations in the world.
